Get approved without delays.
Local Services Ads sit at the top of the search results page with a green Google Guaranteed badge. That badge carries real trust value — but getting it requires passing a background check, licence verification, and insurance confirmation. Applications that stall lock owners out for weeks. This guide walks through the verification process step by step so the approval comes through on the first pass.
Prepare documents before registering
Mismatches between documents trigger manual review and delay approval by days or weeks. Before you start the registration process, make sure the following are ready and consistent.
- Business licence — must show the exact legal name or DBA, current and not expired. Trade licences (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) need the licence number and the holder's name.
- Certificate of insurance — general liability, minimum usually $250,000, $1,000,000 recommended. The name and address on the COI must match the LSA profile exactly. If the COI lists your LLC but the LSA profile uses your DBA, the application will stall.
- Utility bill — for address verification. No PO boxes accepted. The address must match the one on the LSA profile.
Every document should use the same business name and address. A mismatch between the licence, the insurance, and the profile is the single most common reason applications get stuck.
The background check
Google uses a third-party screening provider (Pinkerton or Evident, depending on the region) to verify the business owner and anyone who visits customer premises. Office-only staff are typically exempt.
Here is the process:
- Google emails a screening-portal link to the business owner.
- The owner provides legal names, email addresses, and consent for every person who needs to be screened.
- The screening provider checks criminal registries, sex-offender databases, and civil records.
- Results are reported back to Google. If everyone passes, the badge is granted.
The most common delay here is one person not submitting their information. Every technician or field worker who visits customer premises must submit within 3 days of the initial email. One ignored email holds the whole business back.
Why applications get stuck
If the application has been in "Pending Review" for more than 7 days, the problem is almost always one of these:
Address discrepancies. The address on the licence, the utility bill, and the LSA profile must match. If they do not, fix them by updating the profile to match the documents, or by providing DBA documentation that explains the difference.
Low-quality document uploads. Phone photos of documents are frequently rejected for being blurry, cropped, or illegible. Upload flat, full-page PDFs instead. Every page must be visible and readable.
License-holder name mismatch. If the licence is held by a person who is not listed as an owner or manager in the LSA account, add them. Google will not approve a licence that does not match anyone in the account.
If the application is stalled past 14 days
Do not wait for a resolution by email. Use the in-portal chat support — it is consistently faster than email support for verification issues. When you contact them, ask for a "manual document override" if an auto-rejected document needs to be re-reviewed by a human.
One engagement on this site stalled for 3 weeks because the COI listed the LLC name while the LSA profile used the DBA. Once the document was updated to match the profile, the badge was approved in 48 hours.
Keep the evidence honest after approval
Once the badge is granted and the ads are running, the same verification standard applies: record the lead source, but do not count repeat customers, referrals, or unconfirmed work as advertising credit. LSA leads are platform-documented contacts. Whether they became booked jobs, and what those jobs were worth, requires client confirmation. The attribution standard explains how each level of evidence is counted.
The LSA management page covers ongoing bidding, lead quality, and monthly review.
Questions business owners ask
How long does verification take?
If all documents are consistent and submitted promptly, most applications are approved within 5 – 10 business days. The most common delay is a document mismatch that triggers manual review, which can add 1 – 3 weeks.
Do all employees need to pass the background check?
Only people who visit customer premises. Office-only staff are typically exempt. Every field technician must submit their information within 3 days of the initial email, or the entire application stalls.
What if my licence name does not match my LSA profile?
Update the profile to match the licence, or provide DBA documentation that explains the difference. The key rule: every document must tell the same story about the business name and address.
Can I run LSAs while waiting for the badge?
No. The ads will not go live until verification is complete. The badge is not optional — it is the condition for the ad to appear. Use the waiting period to prepare the account, the review strategy, and the response process so the first day of live ads is a real test.
I count conservatively. Every untracked job is your upside, not my credit.
