How Google AI Overviews affect local service ads and lead generation
How Google serves Search, Performance Max, and Local Services Ads inside AI Overviews, and how local trades qualify for AI search placements.
How Google serves Search, Performance Max, and Local Services Ads inside AI Overviews, and how local trades qualify for AI search placements.
When a homeowner searches Google for a complex trade problem, like “why is my AC blowing warm air and how much to fix it”, Google often shows an AI Overview at the top of the page.
Google also places ads directly above, below, and inside those AI Overviews. For a local service business, this changes which searches spend your money and how your ads qualify.
The short answer
You cannot buy a separate “AI Overview campaign” in Google Ads. Google pulls ads into AI Overviews from active Search and Performance Max campaigns when the user’s question and the AI summary show commercial intent. To win those placements without paying for DIY readers, you need verified primary conversion tracking (GA4/GTM), service-specific landing pages, and strict negative keyword lists.
In traditional Search, your ad matched the words the user typed. Inside an AI Overview, Google matches your ad against two things at once:
| Search example | What the AI Overview explains | Commercial ad that can qualify | Risk if negatives are missing |
|---|---|---|---|
| “water heater leaking from bottom” | Explains tank failure vs drain valve leak and recommends calling a plumber | Local water heater replacement or emergency plumber ad | Paying for clicks from someone looking for a $12 drain valve part |
| “how long does ceramic coating last on a daily driver” | Explains prep, paint correction, and multi-year coating durability | Local auto detailing & ceramic coating shop package ad | Paying for clicks from people shopping for DIY spray bottles |
| “signs of termites in drywall” | Shows pinholes, hollow wood, and professional inspection steps | Local termite inspection and treatment ad | Paying for biology students or out-of-area readers |
Because AI Overviews appear most often on longer, question-style searches, a sloppy campaign will burn budget on DIY browsers. Here is how I structure local trade accounts to capture buyers and block browsers:
Feed Smart Bidding verified call and form events
Google only enters your ad into high-value AI auctions when its bidding model trusts your conversion data. Test Web GTM, Server-Side GTM on Stape, and call duration rules before scaling.
Separate emergency, repair, and high-ticket install themes
When your ad group and landing page match one clear service (such as PPF installation or emergency drain clearing), Google can match your asset to the exact solution in the AI Overview.
Block DIY and research intent with 500+ negative keywords
Add phrase and exact negatives for how to, DIY, kit, parts, manual, reddit, forum, course, and jobs so informational AI Overviews do not eat your daily cap.
Set location targeting to physical Presence
Long questions attract nationwide traffic if your campaign uses Presence or Interest. Lock location settings to Presence so only locals inside your drive radius see the ad.

Your one-page monthly report
Google does not break out a separate 'AI Overview' billing line in standard reports yet. Judge the campaign by verified calls, forms, and booked jobs per dollar spent.

Yes. Google serves Search, Performance Max, and Shopping ads directly above, below, and inside AI Overviews in the US, UK, Canada, and other English markets when the query has commercial intent.
No. Google does not offer a standalone AI Overview campaign type. Existing Search and Performance Max campaigns automatically qualify when your keywords, ad assets, landing page, and conversion signals match both the query and the AI answer.
Use negative keyword lists at the campaign and account level to block informational phrases like how to, DIY, manual, parts, free, and jobs. That keeps your budget on commercial repair and installation searches.
Google uses Smart Bidding signals to decide which advertiser enters an AI Overview auction. If your GA4 and GTM tracking counts fake leads or page views, the algorithm bids on low-intent readers instead of real callers.
Local Services Ads continue to appear at the top of local search results and Google Maps on a pay-per-lead model, now managed through Google Ads pay-per-lead Performance Max.
